Au pair

An Au Pair is a young person (male or female) from overseas who comes to live in with a host family as part of a cultural exchange program.

An Au pair assists the host family with care of their children and light housekeeping duties, whilst increasing their English language skills and being immersed in Australian family life.

An Au Pair typically receives room, board (three standard meals a day) and weekly ‘pocket money’ in accordance with Capaa guidelines. In Australia Au Pairs usually stay with their host family for approximately six months.

Demi Pairs

A Demi Pair typically assists the family 15 hours a week outside of their allocated study hours. (With at least one full day off per week). In return your host family will provide a room and full board (three meals a day) 7 days a week and $80 pocket money to assist with expenses.

Duties may include light housework, some cooking and childcare. Being that “extra pair of hands” is what it is all about.

Extra hours may be agreed upon with your individual family, however you can expect to receive pocket money of A$12/hour for every hour you help beyond the required 15 hours each week.

Nanny

A Nanny is a person who provides sole charge childcare within the family’s home, this can be on a casual or permanent basis. Nannies can be either live in or live out.

A Nanny’s primary role is to take care of the children and maintain their daily routine. They are responsible for all tasks related to the care of the child/ren providing a safe, healthy, fun and educational environment and activities.

Nannies today are often used in place of daycare, because they can be more cost effective and suit families who work hours outside of 9-5 roles.

Babysitters

A babysitter can help a family out on a more short-term casual basis e.g. a few hours during the day or evening or perhaps school drop offs & pickups. They are paid an hourly rate. They may be a student, a mum or a mature person.
